"LOVE ME AGAIN" ANALYSIS

For my music video analysis, I have picked “Love me again” by John Goodman. The story in the video is about a lady and a man falling in love at first sight in a party, showing that love has a strong connection, whilst the singer “John Goodman”, is singing on stage about wanting to re start his relationship for someone he once loved and wants to continue being with her. The lady and the man could represent on what the singer wants; a new beginning, almost like having a dream on what the singer wants. The music video continues with the lady having her “protectors “ putting an end to their interest in each other. It almost plays out like Romeo & Juliet, as you have the Capulet’s and the Montague hating on each other whilst 2 people from different sides of the family are loving each other. What is different in this music video though comparing to Romeo and Juliet; is the man (who acts like Romeo) having his brother’s stick up for him and Juliet, as his brothers want them to love each other. His brothers act in this story like they are the true protectors, as they care. This shows that the “Capulet’s” for Juliet don’t to an extent care for her; they act in this story like security guards. 

The theme “caring” can link back to the singer as his lyrics are describing what he’s done wrong but is willing to change for her, e.g. “know, I’ve done wrong, left your heart torn is that what devils do?”, “I need to know now, will you love me again” etc.  As I said before, visually and emotionally (lyrics) they both play are part in this story as the singer (which I’ve noticed) never directly looks at ”Romeo & Juliet”, the singer focuses on the crowd and wants to express that he wants to rise up and change e.g. “rising up to you”. From a visually point; showing the crowd dancing can have a sense that everyone is rising up, including when the Montague’s rise up towards the Capulet’s as they are standing up to them.

As a character, the singer is often referring himself as a demon, due to the lyrics describing what a demon does. What’s interesting about this; is that during the music video, he’s emotionally describing himself as a demon due to what he has done, whilst physically is acting like an angel as he raises his arms up at the beginning of the song like what an angel does with there wings, but also the singer during the music video is singing like he wants to improve his wrongs and over come them with rights e.g. ”now Im rising from the ground” & “”filled with strength I found” etc.

Throughout the music video; there is a consistent amount of close ups of the singer e.g. when the song begins, the camera cuts to an extreme close up of the singer’s face, showing he is the main focus emotionally. Talking about close ups, the main stars of the music video (Romeo & Juliet) also get an extreme close up, but what’s interesting about this; is that throughout the music video, the close up of Romeo & Juliet get (in some way) closer and closer showing visually and emotionally there connection towards each other as the close up ends with them kissing and being physically together. What really helps the story is the background music e.g. the piano, the guitar etc as it builds on your emotions when connecting with Romeo and Juliet. The background music is also full of joy and wonder, which brings me back to the singer as you see him dance constantly (in a good way) as he is using his negatives into a positive scenario as the area around him is full of love, joy and connection, not just from Romeo and Juliet; but also from the Montague’s around Romeo, as it shows how close they are when they are willing to stick up for him, you can also see the crowd’s attitude being so positive and expressing there inner self. 

Back to the comparison of “Romeo and Juliet”, when it comes to the conclusion of the music video. You see the lady and the man running outside into the street, it then ends with the 2 characters getting hit by the van. You can compare this back to “Romeo and Juliet” as the 2 main stars die for each other when it came to its conclusion. What can be seen throughout the music video are the consistent references to the story of Romeo & Juliet e.g. “The Capulet’s” of Juliet and the Montague’s of Romeo, lovers at first sight in a party then ending with the lovers dying together.

            Re –search:

From research, the singer came out saying the song was for his ex girlfriend due to him not being very nice to her during his relationship. During the process of making this music video; the singer wanted to add “a Romeo and Juliet” theme as its about lovers. The singer writes all of his songs about relationships and something that means to him, as he can express himself and get his thoughts out. He also said that he wanted to show off him from a young age.

After hearing about this, you can definitely sense everything he was talking about in this music video but also more. But what I didn’t realize about this music video is the 2 main stars actually do play Romeo & Juliet; so in a way this music video is based around the singer but spinning it in a Romeo and Juliet style which makes it original. What I also really like about this music video is the little detail the film makers put into the video e.g. they tattooed Romeo’s brothers (the Montague’s) with the word “mum” on there neck. They also did the same to Juliet’s brothers (the Capulet’s) but instead of tattoos, they have given the actors rings to wear so it can capture the 2 households.
